By Committee Chair Dr. T. Floyd Davis

Greetings:

I would like to give you an update on the work of your Director of Missions Search Committee. We began our work by meeting with Bro. Eddie and hearing from him about the work and responsibilities of the Director of Missions. We then obtained job descriptions from a number of associations as well as the job description and qualifications that were used by our state convention when the DOM position was a part of our state convention structure. A review of those job descriptions and qualifications revealed three requirements common to all. Those three were (1) an experienced person of spiritual maturity and sound doctrine, (2) extensive ministry experience as a pastor, and (3) a master’s level degree from seminary (preferably one of our SBC seminaries) or equivalent experience. In addition to those three requirements, we are also looking for a person who has excellent people skills and competence as an administrator.

We have received twenty-two resumes of individuals residing and ministering in eleven different states. I am happy to report that a number of highly qualified and experienced individuals have expressed an interest in becoming our next Director of Missions. I think that speaks well of the health, strength, and reputation of our association.

We are aware of Bro. Eddie’s impending retirement date and feel we are making good progress toward having his successor in place in time to have an orderly transition. Once we have selected a person to recommend to our association, there will be a time for you to meet and visit with the individual. As a committee, we have talked often of the importance of maintaining confidentiality in our work. I commend our committee members on how well they have done in this area. I did want you to know that we are at work. Again, appropriate notice informing you of the person to be recommended and the occasion for you to meet the individual will be given before asking you to vote on our next Director of Missions.

Thank you for your prayers for our committee. We are well aware of the importance and significance of the choice we will be making as an association. Our desire is to know and do God’s will in this matter. Please continue to pray for us.

The FISHING Evangelism Growth Strategy™ uses the simple acrostic FISHING to help church leaders understand the process of evangelism. Each letter in the FISHING acrostic represents a specific task within the church’s overall evangelism strategy. For each task, the church creates a comprehensive approach to win the lost to Jesus Christ. The FISHING Evangelism Growth Strategy™ provides a framework any church can use to construct their evangelism ministry. This is not a program, but a process. Any church can use this book as a guide or model for revitalizing their evangelistic efforts.

NLBA's Korean Mission church has broken ground on a new Auditorium. Louisiana Baptist Mission Builders are overseeing the project. Volunteers are needed during the day to assist the Carpenters, Electricians, Plumbers, etc. This will be a great opportunity to do some "Kingdom Building" in North Bossier. If some of your men or youth would like to help build a church, your Association and Ban Suk Korean Church can use you.

They work Monday - Saturday from 7am - 4pm.

Contact person on site is Bill Temple (318-368-5225)

Call him or stop by Ban Suk to see how your church can help. Half a day, all day or a few hours will be of help. They are looking for completion on the building to be by the end of 2005.

---- Shreveport Church Uses Mall to Help Katrina Survivors ----

Shreveport, la, September 1, 2005: When Summer Grove Baptist members voted to purchase South Park Mall to relocate their church, they had no idea of the impact it would make on northwest Louisiana, much less the whole state. Summer Grove is helping the local shelters with one of their biggest needs…storage.

Using the huge amount of inventory space in the mall, Summer Grove has created almost overnight, a huge Disaster Relief Relay Center (DRRC).

Citizens and churches who desire to donate food, clothing, toiletry, cots, blankets, pillows, etc. should bring items to Entrance #1 of the former South Park Mall at the corner of 3132 Interloop and Jewella.

The DRRC will be open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM

Credited Disaster Relief Shelters that are in need of help in organizing supplies, please send donation to the DRRC.

Credited Disaster Relief Shelters that are experiencing shortages in these items are encouraged to call the Summer Grove DRRC at 318-686-1470 to obtain supplies.

DRRC will be receiving supplies from states such as Wisconsin and Oklahoma

Many of the survivors escaped with what they could carry and little else. There is a tremendous need for clothing, bedding, and other basic items. Many people have clothing that is clean and totally suitable for use, but the Red Cross cannot accept material items (called “in-kind” donations) because the financial and personnel cost of receiving, sorting, transporting these types of gifts is simply too high. Therefore Summer Grove created the DRRC to meet a unique need.

“Everybody can do something to help.” Said Senior Pastor, Dr. Rod Masteller. “There are many people in our community who may not have a lot of money to donate to the Red Cross but they do have clean clothes, bedding, etc. that they can give immediately. We had to give people a practical, immediate way to help our brothers and sisters who have had their lives so horribly disrupted by this disaster. If we can meet the needs of the shelters, then the shelters can more efficiently meet the needs of the people.”

Area churches are encouraged to contact the DRRC and cooperate in this relief effort.

The DRRC is being manned by volunteers from Summer Grove Baptist Church.

Financial donations to the Summer Grove DRRC are also being accepted for the purpose of assisting credited Relief Shelters.
